Buying, racking, and maintaining research hardware is expensive, time-consuming, and easy to get wrong — and it pulls faculty time away from actual research. The SDSS Center for Computation provisions, maintains, and upgrades high-performance computing, storage, and data resources on behalf of the whole Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability community. The result is better infrastructure than most individual labs could afford alone, expert support when things get complicated, and one team to call instead of ten different vendors.
